Vestibular Rehabilitation

Dizziness or Vertigo is commonest compliant for which patients need to visit their physician. Inspite of taking medicines for months and years together, many of them still suffer with these disturbing symptoms.

Patients who benefit from Vestibular Rehabilitation are often those diagnosed with dizziness, imbalance, vertigo, Meniere’s syndrome, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), neck-related dizziness and migraines. Other candidates are patients who have had a stroke or brain injury or who frequently fall.

Common symptoms that can be helped with vestibular rehabilitation include

Dizziness or blurry vision with head movements

 Neck tightness, stiffness and/or pain

Imbalance or the need to hold onto objects when walking

 Headaches

 Frequent falls

Generalized dizziness or foggy head feelings

 Vertigo/spinning

Vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT) is a form of physical therapy that uses specialized exercises that result in gaze and gait stabilization. Most VRT exercises involve head movement, and head movements are essential in stimulating and retraining the vestibular system. This along with advanced Proprioceptive Rehab leads to symptomatic improvement.

Pioneering a rarely practiced avenue in Physiotherapy, Vestibular Rehabilitation at Mission Health is an individualized protocol targeting symptoms such as dizziness, imbalance and frequent falls. After a thorough Clinical examination, the patient is put through sequential rehab protocols which includes a mix of technologies, manual maneuvers and exercise protocol. It uses specialized exercises using head movements and other dynamic rehab moves that result increases gaze and gait stability. Patients suffering from chronic vertigo also seem to benefit with this targeted treatment protocol.
